Staff Accountant

Location: Midtown Manhattan (5 days onsite)

Compensation: $90,000–$100,000 + benefits

A leading New York–based nonprofit organization is seeking a  Senior Accountant to support the Controller with financial reporting, payroll reconciliations, and general ledger management. This role plays a key part in maintaining accurate financial data across multiple entities, preparing audit schedules, and ensuring timely month-end close activities.

Responsibilities

• Prepare, analyze, and upload payroll transactions, ensuring accuracy in all related entries and reconciliations.
• Review and reconcile payroll accounts, employee deductions, benefits, and employer contributions.
• Manage journal entries, bank reconciliations, and monthly balance sheet schedules.
• Record and track fixed assets, calculate depreciation, and maintain supporting schedules.
• Reconcile operating, restricted, and payroll bank accounts across multiple regions.
• Prepare audit schedules and assist with year-end reporting.
• Perform periodic reconciliations of investment and scholarship accounts.
• Identify and resolve discrepancies in payroll or general ledger activity, coordinating with internal teams and external partners.

Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field.
• Minimum 4 years of relevant accounting or audit experience, preferably in the nonprofit or education sector.
• Strong Excel skills; experience with payroll systems.
• Strong attention to detail and organizational skills with the ability to meet deadlines.
• Team-oriented, proactive, and comfortable in a fast-paced environment.
