This position is responsible for accurate reading and re-reading electric and water meters and assisting with the provision of customer service.
Major Duties
Minimum Qualifications
High School diploma or equivalent; one (1) to two (2) years experience; possession of a valid driver's license issued by the State of Georgia for the type of vehicle or equipment operated; equivalent combination of education and experience.
Knowledge Required by the Position
Knowledge of water and electric meter functions and billing methods
Knowledge of electrical safety regulations
Knowledge of the City electric and water systems
Knowledge of the location of City streets and meters
Skill in operating a hand-held meter-reading unit
Skill in oral and written communication
Skill in dealing with the general public
Ability to observe meter activity accurately and record readings legibly
Ability to make mathematical computations rapidly and accurately
Supervisory Controls : Employees in this position follow designated routes, receive specific work instructions and refer unusual questions and requests to the supervisor. The supervisor spot-checks completed work for compliance with procedures, accuracy, and the nature and propriety of the final results. Work is performed under the general supervision of the Meter Reader Foreman.
Guidelines : Guidelines include the National Electrical Code, City codes, policies and procedures, and supervisory instructions. These guidelines are generally clear and specific, but may require some interpretation in application.
Complexity : This position consists of related meter reading and customer service tasks.
Scope and Effect : The purpose of this position is to read utility meters and assist with the provision of services to customers. Successful performance helps ensure continued water and electric services and the timely resolution of account problems for customers.

Purpose of Contacts : Contacts are typically to give or exchange information and provide services.
Physical Demands : The work is typically performed with the employee intermittently sitting, standing, walking, bending, crouching or stooping. The employee is required to frequently lift light and heavy objects, climb ladders, use tools or equipment requiring a high degree of dexterity, and distinguish between shades of color.
Work Environment : The work is performed outdoors and in an office. The employee is exposed to noise, dust, dirt, machinery with moving parts, and occasional inclement weather.
